AIS Software Development Services Achieves SW-CMM® Level 5 |
MCLEAN, VA - Advanced Information Services Inc. (AIS) announced today that it has been assessed at Level 5 of the Capability Maturity Model® for Software (SW-CMM). This rating affirms that the organization is positioned to deliver even higher levels of software quality more quickly, predictably, and at lower cost to its customers.
The Level 5 rating resulted from a CMM-Based Appraisal for Internal Process Improvement (CBA-IPI) that AIS conducted December 5, 2005 - December 16, 2005. The assessment scrutinized AIS software development and maintenance practices in both the Federal Services Group and Commercial Services Group. AIS staff directly involved with its Software Development Services operations participated in the assessment. Gloria Leman, an SEI-Authorized Lead Assessor, led the assessment team of AIS staff.
SW-CMM is a framework that describes effective engineering, management, and organizational practices for software development and maintenance. The model describes hundreds of key practices that are associated with the five progressive maturity levels of the model: 1) Initial; 2) Repeatable; 3) Defined; 4) Managed; and 5) Optimizing. Organizations that implement the practices contained within the model dramatically improve their ability to deliver high quality software on time and within budget. This assessment confirms that the software development and maintenance practices of AIS are consistent with the highest level of maturity defined by the model: Level 5, Optimizing.
The SW-CMM was developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) as part of its goal to advance the state of the practice of software engineering. The SEI is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by Carnegie Mellon University.
Founded in 1986 by Girish Seshagiri, AIS is a leading information technology firm with offices in McLean, VA, Peoria, IL, and an offshore subsidiary in Chennai, India. AIS employs 32 U.S. staff providing software development services, software process services, software products, and software staffing services. AIS is an SEI Partner for Capability Maturity Model Integration and Team Software ProcessSM services, which are technologies related to the SW-CMM. AIS customers include Caterpillar Inc., Carrier Corporation, OSF Healthcare Systems, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), U.S. Department of the Treasury, and the U.S. Navy.
The company gained international recognition when it received the 1999 Software Process Achievement Award given jointly by the SEI and the Institute of Electronic & Electrical Engineers (IEEE). Proclaimed as the highest award in the software industry, AIS joined the ranks of NASA, Raytheon, and Hughes Aircraft, all prior recipients. AIS now joins an elite set of organizations that have been assessed at Level 5. Of comparably-sized organizations that have chosen to invest in a software process improvement program and report assessment results, only 2.4% have achieved SW-CMM Level 5 (see reference at end of this article). As a federal government contractor and award-winning Small Business that has achieved SW-CMM Level 5, AIS now possesses a unique combination of credentials.
AIS began its CMM-based process improvement journey in January of 1992. AIS achieved SW-CMM Level 3 in April 1999 and SW-CMM Level 4 in November 2004.
Stephen Shook, President of AIS, sponsored the assessment. "I thank Gloria Leman and the whole assessment team for their teamwork and commitment to complete the assessment with honesty and fidelity to the appraisal process. I have the highest confidence that our SW-CMM Level 5 rating accurately reflects the state of our software development and maintenance practices", Shook said. "This is a phenomenal accomplishment, which is the result of over a decade of process improvement work. I thank each AIS person - past and present - for their contribution to this elite achievement. It is truly the Software Engineers, team members, team leaders, and process teams who have innovated, executed, and continuously improved the software processes at AIS to make this possible. I especially thank Girish Seshagiri, whose vision, inspiration, and leadership launched our journey to excellence."
